ICP launched The Photographers in the spring of 1974 to provide a forum for distinguished photographers to present their work and discuss their ideas and techniques with an audience of professionals, students, and dedicated amateurs, all of whom share a deep interest in photography.

The Photographers is a public program unique to ICP, giving audiences both within and outside the photography trade an opportunity to learn from professional photographers firsthand, and to engage speakers in an often spirited question-and-answer session that provides additional opportunities to extend their technical experience, aesthetic sensibilities, and glean behind-the-scenes information on the careers and working habits of successful photographers. Speakers in the series represent the wide range of photographic expression, from photojournalism to fashion to art.
